The planning competition for the new construction of a multi-storey residential building made of wood with 35 flats has been the result of cooperation with various planning offices: the Austrian architectural office Kaufmann Architekten and the structural engineering office Merz Kley Partner, the structural and safety planning office Gamper-Unterwegger from Merano and the facilities and fire protection planning office Studio Tecnico Vettori from Bolzano.
By means of the expertise of this wide-ranging team, a building was designed that makes use of the latest and most innovative construction techniques involving timber construction. The building consists of a compact central body made of wood and reinforced concrete, which contains the flats with loggias at the four corners. The ground connection is defined by a reinforced concrete volume, which houses the communal activities planned for the East Druso district.
Utilising durable and low-maintenance cladding materials such as a ventilated aluminium façade, prefabricated reinforced concrete elements for the loggias or larch wood aesthetically defines the closed elements of the building volume, while common outdoor spaces in the lower and upper volume areas are marked by climbing plants.
